Kealkill NS is hosting a fundraising evening modelled on the popular 20K Drop TV show in a bid to raise funds for sports facilities its pupils can use year round.
The fundraising event – to be held at the Westlodge Hotel on 10 May 2019 – will give guests the chance to compete for a share of a 20 thousand euro prize pot. Randomly selected members of the audience will be able to win up to €2,500 each in exchange for answering general knowledge questions.
Whoever wins cash on the night, the children at Kealkill NS are sure to emerge as winners, with funds raised earmarked for “the Kealkill NS Field of Dreams”.
The school plans to install an AstroTurf pitch to upgrade a waterlogged school pitch which is currently unplayable for most of the school year.
“Children don’t put any limit on their sporting ambitions”, says Kealkill NS principal Darragh Carey, “and it would be great to say in future years that some brilliant new sporting careers began here. But school pitches are about more than competition. They’re places where children learn really important skills like teamwork and coordination, and that’s why it’s so important that we have facilities we can make use of all year”.
“Working on children’s fitness, confidence, and their ability to collaborate with each other pays dividends in the classroom as well as on the sports field”.
The development of the school pitch is a logical move for the school which has expanded in recent years, with three new classrooms added in 2016.
“With the help of our sponsors and everyone who attends the 20K Drop, says Bill Nyhan – chair of the Board of Governers – “Kealkill NS will be able to offer children the same kind of fantastic facilities outdoors that we are able to provide them with inside the school”.
